Abstract

This paper documents the presence of a gender gap in the success rate of competitive fellowships program to finance post-graduate studies. We employ a unique data set that combines administrative information from the University of Barcelona, the fellowship program Fundacio Bancaria La Caixa, and the 2011 Spanish Population Census. Our empirical analysis reveals that (i) high-GPA women are less likely to participate in the program than men with the same GPA, and (ii) female applicants to the program have lower success rates than male applicants with the same GPA. We show that part of the gender gap in success rates is due to female preference for fellowships to less-distant locations, which happen to be more competitive due to higher excess demand.
