Resumen

In many collective action problems, people may feel powerless to affect the aggregate outcomes. Arguably the best way to have an impact in these situations is via social influence, i. e. the direct and indirect influence peoples actions have on others. This raises two questions: how much influence do people have and to what extent are they aware of their influence? Combining theory and experimental methodology, we propose a framework enabling us to vary exogenously players choices and their levels of influence. We find that people have substantial influence on aggregate outcomes which changes with their positions in the social network. Influence operates at least partially via players beliefs. We also find that people are at least partially aware of their influence on others.
